Annette Funicello was 13 years aged when she was noticed by the studio's head Walt Disney dancing in an amateur production called Swan Lake in Fullerton California. Her Mickey Mouse Club teammates were furious after Funicello became part of the cast in the first season of the show, without being required to audition. Funicello appeared alongside Frankie Avalon in Beach Party. It was the very first in a sequence of beach parties films that were hugely popular. The scripts for each of these films were thoroughly reviewed and endorsed by Walt Disney so as to ensure the image of Annette was protected.
